LAP Lambert Academic Publishers is yet again targeting our postgraduates for publishing their theses.
Please be reminded of prof Crewe's 2009
letter outlining UP's policy regarding Lambert Publishers. An excerpt follows: "Having reviewed your request regarding the publishing of theses and dissertations of students from the University of Pretoria, we have decided that this is not a practice that we would like to encourage.
Copyright in this material is vested in the University of Pretoria"
and a subsequent Campus News article (posted 1 February 2010):
"Publication of dissertations and theses as books
By Alta Scheepers
A concern known as LAP Lambert Academic Publishing is approaching many staff and students across the University with offers to 'publish' theses and dissertations.
Essentially, LAP proposes to place PDFs of theses and dissertations on the web, which is not a form of 'publishing' that will have any career advancement or subsidy benefits for anyone in the UP community.
Moreover, the University holds the copyright on theses and dissertations produced by our staff and students and all are available on the University's digital repository (http://upetd.up.ac.za). The University of Pretoria is thus emphatically opposed to this type of publishing: if you receive any requests from LAP - or VDM, with whom it is closely associated, you are requested to decline their offer, or else, to refer the correspondence to Prof Neil Roos (Director: Postgraduate Studies).
Professor Crewe, Vice Principal for Research and Postgraduate Studies has written to LAP asking them to desist from any further contact with academic staff or students at UP. If you require further detail on this matter, please do not hesitate to contact Prof Roos (neil.roos @up.ac.za). If you have questions related to identifying and approaching scholarly publishing houses, Prof Roos would be more than willing to assist."
