The theme for this year’s Sanlam Prize for Youth Literature is “hope”. The competition is now open and entries will be accepted until 30 June 2011.
Manuscripts can be submitted in any of the official languages of South Africa. The categories are: English, Afrikaans, Nguni-languages, Sotho-langauges, Tshivenda, Xitsonga and SiSwati. In each category there is a gold prize of R12 000 and a silver prize of R6 000 to be won. The winning manuscripts will also be published.
Last year’s Sanlam Prize for Youth Literature had the theme “humour”. It produced the winners Willem Poprok by Derick van der Walt, Sidekick by Adeline Radloff, Agency Blue by Alex Smith, Ngiyolibala Ngife by Dumisanie Sibiya, and Ke a Hwa, Ke a Ikepela by Mabonchi Motimele Goodwill.
